The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (VPM) at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and the School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) at the College of Food Agricultural and Environmental Sciences invite applications for a 9-month, tenure-track faculty position in Wildlife and Ecosystem Health. The position will have a primary appointment in VPM (0.7 FTE) with a joint appointment (0.3 FTE) in SENR. The successful candidate will be part of a core Ecosystem Health teaching and research faculty appointed in VPM, SENR, and at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The position is expected to be filled at the Assistant Professor level, but faculty rank will be based upon qualifications and experience of the candidate.
Teaching and Administrative Responsibilities: The successful candidate will spend approximately 50% of time teaching. The candidate will be expected to create a new undergraduate course and a new graduate course focused on wildlife health and disease ecology. In addition, he or she will lead the creation and implementation of a new graduate specialization in Ecosystem Health within the existing Master of Environment and Natural Resources (MENR) degree program. This role will include administrative duties as well as the supervision and mentoring of graduate students enrolled in the specialization.
Research Responsibilities: The successful candidate will spend approximately 50% of time conducting research. Expectations are to develop a nationally recognized scholarly research program incorporating graduate and undergraduate students, including independent or collaborative research relevant to VPM and SENR. The candidate will develop an externally funded research program that incorporates Ecosystem Health MENR graduate students. Opportunities exist for collaboration with other ecosystem health specialists, ecologists, epidemiologists, microbiologists, and related specialists working in diverse areas of ecology, animal health, population health, environmental health, and zoonotic diseases within the Departments of VPM and SENR. Multi-disciplinary opportunities are also available within the OSU including the Infectious Diseases Institute and the Global One Health Initiative.
Required characteristics of the successful candidate include:
PhD degree in a discipline directly relevant to Ecosystem Health (e.g. Wildlife Ecology, Epidemiology, Biological Sciences, or related field), or a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent)
Clear evidence of scholarly expertise in a discipline directly relevant to Ecosystem Health
Experience in teaching undergraduate or graduate courses
Experience mentoring undergraduate or graduate students
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Willingness and ability to work cooperatively with other faculty and staff, as well as with wildlife, fisheries and veterinary professionals within and outside the university, including wildlife conservation agencies and non-governmental organizations
Other desired characteristics of the successful candidate include:
Board certification in an appropriate veterinary medical specialty college, additional graduate training or post-doctoral training, or relevant certification (e.g. The Wildlife Society or American Fisheries Society certification)
Experience in field work or conducting research with free-ranging wildlife
Demonstration of ability to work with local, state or federal wildlife agencies
The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine provides the major population medicine and ecosystem health focus for the College of Veterinary Medicine. Activities in the department combine basic and applied research to address problems in broad areas of animal health, production and veterinary public health. There are approximately 35 faculty members in the department located at the College of Veterinary Medicine in Columbus, the Food Animal Health Research Program (FAHRP) in Wooster, and The Ohio State Large Animal Services at Marysville. This structure provides extensive teaching resources and considerable opportunity for collaborative research.
The School of Environment and Natural Resources provides a focus on the interactions of people and the environment, with expertise in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. There are approximately 45 members located on both the Columbus and Wooster campuses. Research areas of focus include quantitative ecology, conservation biology, wildlife management, human dimensions in environment, and aquatic science and management. Wildlife faculty in SENR maintain a cooperative relationship with Ohio Division of Wildlife through the Terrestrial Wildlife Ecology Lab.
