The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 that represents over 91,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia and uniformed services, is seeking a News Reporter to join our Publications team located at our Headquarters office in Schaumburg, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago.
Reporting to the Senior News Editor, the News Reporter will be responsible for writing articles on veterinary and animal-related news for publication in print and digital media owned by the AVMA. The News Reporter will generate story leads, conduct interviews, perform research and obtain photographs, as needed, to develop news articles. The position will also work closely with the Online Editorial Assistant to develop story summaries, photo galleries, maps, videos and graphs for the website, social media and the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) app.
A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, with a minimum of two years of related post-college work experience, preferably in newspapers, is required. Association experience is a plus. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, including the ability to communicate to both the scientific and nonscientific communities. We require working experience and knowledge with interviewing, reporting, editing and using Associated Press style. Familiarity with Adobe InCopy and experience writing for social media are desired. A successful candidate must be highly organized, with extreme attention to detail; able to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously; and able to work effectively as a member of a team and independently. The flexibility to work outside regular business hours and travel on behalf of the AVMA is required, with approximately 15% travel.
