Our Shelter Veterinarian is a key part of a dedicated and enthusiastic team working in a fast-paced environment. Compassionate service is a top priority and the Veterinarian has an important role in ensuring all interactions reflect this core value. The Veterinarian has a deep, personal passion for cats and our mission. He/she must have a strong sense of teamwork and collaboration, with the ability to foster the same amongst others. The Veterinarian must have the ability to function effectively under stressful and ambiguous circumstances, and the ability to accept direction as well as to act under their own initiative as needed. High-level organizational skills are required in order to meet time demands and multiple duties; this person must have the ability to manage multiple and sometimes conflicting priorities and deliver timely results. As a lead team member, this person will be responsible for collaborating with the Medical, Adoption and Foster Managers and Intake Coordinator as well as with our Volunteer Store Leads. The Veterinarian will also interact with staff, foster parents, guests, donors and volunteers. It is important that an attitude of friendly cooperation among all shelter staff be continually cultivated.
Essential Job Functions
• Ensure overall health, treatment and diagnosis of cats available for adoption and in foster care. This includes proper intake screening in accordance with standard operating procedures, regular examinations; follow up on known medical issues or needed rechecks/treatments and proper documentation of animal medical records. Ensure that all animals going out for adoption have been approved as 'ready to go'. Medical exams and written medical records should be completed within 36 hours of exam or treatment. Medical records will be kept easily accessible to staff. • Ensure overall health, treatment and diagnosis of resident animals. This includes regular physical examinations and evaluations, including overseeing weekly rounds of each room, assuring that each cat is checked for any health or behavioral issues and assessing the general condition of the room, follow up on known medical issues and necessary rechecks/treatments and proper documentation of animal medical records. • Perform necessary surgeries and medical treatments in accordance with accepted professional standards; keep license and insurance policy current and free of complaints. • Ensure all equipment in the clinic is maintained in safe working order. Duties to include ensuring preventative maintenance of all surgical and medical equipment are performed per manufacturer guidelines and per any regulatory requirements. • Ensure that all drugs and supplies are stored and handled in accordance with Washington State and Federal laws and regulations. • Perform humane euthanasia as needed. • Render emergency veterinary care as needed. • Work closely with and be responsive to all coworkers, foster care families and volunteers. Interactions should be positive and professional in order to further the goals of the department, as you are all very reliant on each other to meet those goals. • Provide assistance to other departments as needed including education and staff medical training. • Work within established budgetary guidelines for department. • Manage medical costs in the most efficient way including the possible outsourcing of veterinary cases.

Education/Experience Requirements and Preferred Requirements
• Veterinary of Medicine doctorate degree • 3+ years of experience as Veterinarian; 1+ years working with cats specifically. • Current Washington State License DVM required. • Animal shelter experience preferred
