Purpose of the Position
The Specialty Service Manager performs a vital role in our hospital. This Manager will make substantial independent decisions to ensure efficient hospital operation; supervise hospital personnel and will ensure the continued provision of excellent patient care. The primary duty of the Specialty Service Manager is to manage the specialty veterinary support staff of the Pet Emergency & Specialty Center. Knowledge and Experience
At least 2 years of experience in leadership positions with a strong service orientation.
At least 4 years of veterinary experience.

Foster PESC Code of Conduct.
Independently manage your work schedule by working with other managers to ensure that all days of the week are covered during prime specialty hours.
Divide your time with each specialty service as needed and as directed by the leadership team to include time with all specialty services and the emergency and critical care department.
Coordinate and cooperate with hospital directors and doctors.
Provide leadership guidelines and examples of courtesy and professionalism in working with clients and coworkers.
Encourage a “team atmosphere” on shifts by managing other staff members with respect, recognizing achievement and encouraging growth.
Interface, direct, and supervise the work of veterinary assistants, technicians and lead technicians regarding all aspects of medical care including, but not limited to, quality of nursing care, anesthetic procedures/protocols, surgical assistance procedures/protocols, laboratory procedures/protocols, radiology procedures/protocols, safety procedures/protocols, hospital maintenance, and infectious disease control.
Participate in planning and executing staff appreciation events. Lead role in RDVM tech appreciation event.
When working with multiple doctors, make sure technical staffing is equitably allocated.
Work with other managers to develop monthly work and on-call schedules for all employees.
Take an active role in controlling labor costs for each of the specialty services
Complete and distribute each preliminary schedule by the 15th day of the preceding month or as directed by the hospital director or leadership team.
Participate in interviewing, selecting and training veterinary technicians and other support staff.
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all issues of salary and personnel management.
Reprimand staff members as needed. Engage in hiring, firing, disciplinary, advancement and promotion activities of staff members, subject to approval by supervisors.
Customarily and regularly exercise discretionary powers in dealing with staff members and solving practice problems. Report practice problems directly to other service managers. Work with other service managers to identify and solve problems. Report problems and proposed action plan to hospital director team.
Serve as an active manager of staff members when in the clinic, directing the work of volunteers, veterinary assistants, technicians, and lead technicians.
Oversee and participate in performance evaluation distribution along with appraising employee productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status.
Work scheduled hours on technical shifts to allow monitoring and evaluation of technical staff.
Be available to adjust for scheduling problems or staff absences, filling in as needed to ensure adequate shift coverage to provide good patient care.
Notify hospital director team in writing prior to any planned decrease in minimum clinic hours worked in any one work week (i.e. request vacation time).
Complete all delegated tasks in a timely and thorough manner.
Manage your hospital service with dedication and innovation.
Take an active role in promoting the growth and increased productivity of each of the specialty services
Take a leadership role in all scheduled meetings.
Meet regularly with the Hospital Director, Medical Director, Managing Director and the rest of the Leadership Team[IF1][TG2] to ensure good communication and smooth hospital operation.
Monitor hospital appearance and arrange for repairs/maintenance as necessary.
Oversee weekday custodial job performance and tasks
Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to and monitor the safety practices of other staff members.
Oversee the new employee-training program. Develop standard training protocols and additional training materials as needed.
Assist in training new staff members on shift.
Monitor technician ability and execution of training topics on shift.
Set a positive example on shifts in regard to hospital policies and professional demeanor.
Proactively maintain all hospital equipment in working order.
Follow all hospital financial policies.
Handle difficult clients and complex financial transactions. Complete accounting procedures accurately on computer.
Assist with client questions regarding financial issues.
Become efficient in IT programs used by the practice such as Workday, Cubex, Smartflow, EZVet, and other programs as needed.
Manage HR and complete tasks as required within “Workday” or other staff management program as directed by leadership team.
This manager position requires a demonstrated competency of a Lead Technician and the associated technical responsibilities at the PESC.
