The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association, established in 1863 & representing over 95,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking an Advocacy Media Relations Specialist to join our Marketing & Communications team. Structured to work for its members, AVMA acts as a collective voice for its membership and for the profession. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Media Relations, this position is responsible for promoting the AVMA, AVMA activities, and the veterinary profession to the media, AVMA members, key stakeholders and the general public and will contribute to the development of information pieces designed to enhance the public perception of the veterinary profession and the role the profession plays in animal and public health issues. They will serve as the lead Marketing/Communications liaison to AVMA’s Government Relations Division and Division of State Advocacy, (located in AVMA’s Washington DC office) to develop communications materials designed to help advance the state and federal legislative and regulatory objectives of the AVMA. The Advocacy Media Relations Specialist is focused on pitching and promoting advocacy and regulatory topics to the national media and veterinary press, as well as coordinating AVMA’s response to media inquiries on these topics; including researching topics, identifying content experts, and writing and producing frequent press releases, information sheets, talking points and online web content. They also manage AVMA’s Congressional Advocacy Network, our online grassroots platform; and work with the social media team to engage media and influencers through AVMA social media channels and assist in responding to incoming media and stakeholder requests. This position can be based in either our Schaumburg, IL or Washington, D.C. office, up to 25% travel.

A minimum of 4 years’ experience in government relations/media relations is required, association experience preferred
BS/BA in Communications, Journalism, or a related field
Strong writing and editing skills
Skilled at taking initiative and developing story ideas to support key AVMA strategies
Experience with local and national press and media
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Products
Must possess excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills
Must be collaborative and able to communicate effectively with scientific and non-scientific communities
Must have excellent project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
