The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 96,500 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking an Assistant Director of Data Architecture to join our Digital  Services and Solutions Division team in our Headquarters office in Schaumburg, IL.  Structured to work for its members, AVMA acts as a collective voice for its membership and for the profession.  Our mission is to lead the profession by advocating for our members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health.

Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, this newly created position will be responsible for the architecture and management of the AVMA cloud-based Azure enterprise platform (data warehouse, data lake, data integration) and the processes required to extract, transform, cleanse, and load the data into the enterprise data warehouse and data marts. They will deliver data warehousing solutions, including data modeling, solutions integration, and working collaboratively with other team members to troubleshoot and ensure data quality of the AVMA data warehouse. Approximately 10% travel.

To be successful in this role, you must be highly collaborative and passionate about AVMA’s mission. Additional qualifications include:

  • BA/BS degree in data science, data engineering, computer science or a related technical field. Additional education preferred (Master’s degree) but can substitute for the desired years of experience.
  • 3+ years of related experience, association experience a plus.
  • Experience on the Azure Stack (Data Lake Gen 2, Data Factory, Azure Active Directory, IAM/RBAC Permissions).
  • Deep familiarity with orchestration using Azure Data Factory.
  • Experience with normalized and dimensional data modeling.
  • Working knowledge of SQL Server Integration Services.
  • Understanding of Relational Data Models.
  • Experience translating business requirements into technical requirements and data models.
  • Practical experience developing and data profiling using SQL, specifically T-SQL and SQL Server.
  • Experience with Databricks and Azure Functions.
  • Experience with Python and Pandas, specifically data transformations and manipulation.
  • Experience with Powershell.
  • Knowledge of Azure DevOps and CI/CD Implementation and Best Practices.
  • General working knowledge or strong familiarity with Microsoft PowerBI.
  • Strong desire to work cross-functionally with excellent communication skills.
  • Proactive, professional, accountable and results-oriented; comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and diplomacy when interacting with staff and volunteer leadership; solid ability to work in a team environment.
  • Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented and able to multi-task within tight deadlines; strong project management skills are also required.
