Clinical-Track Assistant/Associate Professor, Small Animal Interventional Radiology and Minimally Invasive Procedures. The College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia, invites applications for a clinical-track (non-tenure track) faculty position in small animal interventional radiology at the rank of assistant or associate professor. Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree and advanced training in interventional radiology. Candidates should also have board certification or have successfully completed a residency training program accepted by a specialty college recognized by the American Board of Veterinary Specialties or the European Board of Veterinary Specialization. Specialties include, but are not limited to, internal medicine, surgery, and emergency and critical care. For all candidates, salary and entry rank will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and qualifications.
The successful candidate will join an interventional radiology and minimally invasive procedures service that includes individuals in the internal medicine, cardiology, and soft tissue surgery services. The interventional radiology service maintains a busy and diverse caseload with substantial potential for growth including laser lithotripsy, laser ablation of ectopic ureters, urethral bulking, urethral stent placement, management of subcutaneous bypass devices, tracheal stents, and coiling of intrahepatic shunts with potential to incorporate and develop other procedures.
The major responsibilities for the successful candidate are to provide service and teaching of small animal interventional radiology and to perform minimally invasive procedures in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, to actively participate in training of residents and interns, and to provide information on procedures in appropriate pre-clinical courses, journal clubs, and seminars. Potential for collaborative research abounds; however, advancement within this faculty track does not include a major research requirement. Proportionate assignments for each area will be based on the interests of the candidate in conjunction with the missions of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the department. Key competencies for potential candidates include astute and personable communication skills and a comfort level with busy small animal medical and surgical clinics.
The Veterinary Teaching Hospital utilizes vanguard technology in diagnostic imaging, including a 64-slice CT scanner, 3.0 Tesla MRI, digital radiography, ultrasound, and nuclear scintigraphy. A General Electric OEC 9900 Elite C-arm resides in a dedicated interventional radiology suite that is equipped with a Dornier Medilas H UroPulse Ho:YAG laser (variable up to 20 W of power and Smart Flex fibers). Storz and Olympus equipment, along with appropriate surgical instruments, are available for flexible and rigid endoscopy. A variety of stents including tracheal, ureteral, urethral, nasopharyngeal, and caval, in addition to balloons for dilating strictures (e.g., esophageal, urethral), and coils for intrahepatic shunts, are available. We have capability of doing urethral bulking, subcutaneous ureteral bypass placement, and urethral hydraulic occluder placement.
The UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital is staffed with or supported by specialists in general and orthopedic surgery, internal medicine, neurology, cardiology, oncology, ophthalmology, emergency and critical care, dermatology, anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, anatomic and clinical pathology, and zoological medicine. The hospital features radiation oncology including a linear accelerator as well as a 24/7 fully staffed intensive care unit with ventilator support capabilities.
