Title: Staff Veterinarian

Job Duties include but are not limited to:

• Provides preventative treatments for infections, disease prevention and control, general health, parasite diagnosis and treatment

• Examines animals, evaluates animals’ health and performs veterinary medical and procedures including vaccinations, prescribing and administering of medications, anti-parasite treatments

• Assists with oversight of students completing the “Animal Control” LSU SVM rotation

• Performs medical rounds on assigned days 

• Participates in population rounds on assigned days

• Oversees the intake process of all animals entering the shelter

• Performs medical rounds on assigned days 

• Participates in population rounds on assigned days

• Performs high volume surgical sterilization of dogs and cats 

• Performs additional surgeries including, but not limited to, hernia repair, mass removal, amputation,  simple orthopedic procedures, enucleation, replacement of third eyelid gland prolapse, dental prophylaxis and extraction, etc.

• Maintains medical record and drug use logs to standards of veterinary and sheltering practices; ensures that records are in order and complete.

• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of shelter animal health protocols, surgical procedures and companion animal health issues

• Perform, instruct, and assist with humane euthanasia

Provide quality medicine and compassionate care to each patient.

Be efficient in a fast-paced environment, and able to multi-task while staying organized.

Have strong client interaction, written, and oral communication skills.

Be familiar with all shelter Standard Operating Procedures and the Employee Manual.

Ability to represent CAA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.

Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within CAA, with volunteers, the public and be a team player.

Must be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions.

Familiarity with basic word processing systems and medical data and management programs

Required Professional Licensing or Certifications:

Valid License to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of Louisiana.

CDS license

USDA class 2 license
