Salary is commensurate on experience. A raise may be considered at 90 days, six months and a year, then every six months to a year. Three 10- 14 hours shifts per week are considered full time. One week PTO initially. Two weeks after one year. Additional PTO up to six weeks possible.

The Animal Emergency Room is looking for full time, part time, or relief emergency veterinarians to complement the emergency team. Our Practice: The Animal Emergency Room is an AAHA- accredited, privately owned, after-hours facility located in Northwest San Antonio that has thrived since start up in 2000.
Our Owner/Chief Medical Officer is an ABVP Diplomate in Canine and Feline Practice, and soon to be a Founding member of the ABVP Emergency Practice Fellowship. She is also an associate editor in the Emergency Medicine Folder on the Veterinary Information Network. She has had experience mentoring new veterinarians and is willing to mentor a veterinarian interested in ER work or in pursuing ABVP board certification and/or an Emergency Practice Fellowship.

Our facility is well staffed and fully equipped with the most advanced technology to manage urgent and emergency cases. Our hospital has an in-house lab, 2021 Digital X-ray machine, GE Ultrasound, fully equipped surgical suite, and an isolation room viewable from the treatment room for constant monitoring.

The Ideal Candidate: Veterinarians should be able to work overnight, independently, prioritize patient treatment and procedures, communicate well with clients and staff, direct the staff respectfully, and contribute to the positive work environment. Confidence in soft-tissue surgical skills is a plus for common surgical emergencies. Staff veterinarians are expected to use the most current treatment modalities and participate in monthly staff/doctor meetings. Veterinarians should also be able to communicate proactively to the area veterinarians of San Antonio. Some holiday hours are required and split fairly among associates.
Mentorship: Our Chief Medical Officer is happy to mentor new graduates. She looks forward to collaborating in hospital with any new graduates for the first 2-6 months. Following the initial mentoring period, she will be available for consultations or hospital visits if assistance is needed.
Additionally, she would be willing to provide the same assistance for experienced doctors venturing into emergency care for the first time if requested.
The Animal Emergency Room is a fun, inclusive and diverse environment where staff can focus on excellent emergency and urgent care. We strive to serve our patients by advocating, counseling, and educating each client while finding personal fulfillment by exceeding our client’s expectations.
Animal Emergency Room is a privately owned exclusively overnight and weekend emergency and urgent care clinic. The hospital employs a practice manager, and 14 full and part time experienced veterinary nurses and receptionists. Four to five assistants are present per veterinarian at least 8 hours of a shift.
The hospital resides in Balcones Heights, a small, incorporated community within the San Antonio city limits with its own police and fire department. The hospital is located on Fredericksburg Rd, which extends to the large San Antonio medical center complex to the north and downtown San Antonio to the south. A dental office is adjacent to the clinic. There is a 24-hour Planet Fitness across the street from the hospital and 24-hour Whataburger and convenience stores close by.
Animal Emergency Room pays for CE attendance for the staff to Southwest Veterinary Symposium or other veterinary conferences in the San Antonio area. Full time veterinarians are provided a stipend which they may use for any type of CE. "Extra" stipend may be given for RECOVER training, AFAST/TFAST training, or other types of CE on a case-by-case basis.
In addition to providing care for pets b...rought in by their pet parents, Animal Emergency Room has been contracted with Animal Care Services and the City of San Antonio for over 17 years to provide after hours emergency care for San Antonio's stray injured pets. The pets are taken to Animal Care Services in the morning for further medical care and hopefully to be reunited with their owners.
